As a member of the Rooster Racing team I was among nearly 1500 riders, including champion cyclist and Livestrong founder Lance Armstrong, who took to the back roads of Davis, Winters, and Vacaville on July 10th for one purpose: to help win the fight against cancer. With a starting point in central Davis, riders had the option of testing their legs in the 40, 70, or 105-mile course that boasted flat terrain, beautiful weather, and plenty of refreshments to keep the riders well-nourished and hydrated.
Many of the participants were no strangers to the cause they were riding for. Over 400 people on Sunday were part of the now 28 million people worldwide who have beaten the disease. Some rode individually and some in groups that hailed from 32 different states nationwide.
Aside from the sheer enjoyment I get from riding my bike, I really enjoyed making a difference in the lives of others and serving a purpose that is much greater than me. Cumulatively, participants in Sunday’s ride raised over $800,000 for the Livestrong foundation. Cancer is still a terrible force to be reckoned with, and possibly will be for some time, but the fight isn’t over and with events like Livestrong Davis to keep hope alive, the fight will be won… one pedal stroke at a time.
